The awakening of inborn genius is an innate expectation of the human soul that can become the cause of tremendous disappointment and tragedy where it fails to materialize. Here, genius means “the spirit for life that is already there,” the sense of meaning and life purpose seeded into each individual soul. Issues of violence, apathy, depression and suicide in young people often stem from a lack of blessing and confirmation of the inner nobility and unique genius of their souls.

Omitting the specific education of genius in favor of simple socialization and general instruction creates a painful loss for both the individual and the community. General education can prepare a person for daily life, but genius based mentoring and genius education are needed to awaken a person to who they are intended to be and what gifts they have to give to the world.

When used in creative ways, mentoring becomes a “living bridge” between generations, a practice that invites youth into the true adventures of life while helping to awaken elders and generate healthy, aware communities. Genius based mentoring extends to all periods of life and all meaningful endeavors, the arts as well as the sciences, the spiritual paths as well as the critical work of helping nature heal.

Human genius is a natural source of the resiliency needed to survive and live with purpose in a troubled and rapidly changing world. As we face global challenges that threaten the environment and question the very meaning of culture, the old ideas and creative practices of genius mentoring become essential for reducing violence, awakening creativity and fully engaging the great diversity of genius in the human soul.

Genius based mentoring anchors the self-worth of young people in the natural gifts and talents waiting to fully awaken in them. Genius fosters genius as student and mentor both awaken to a greater sense of meaning and purpose in life. Seen this way, the central task of educators and mentors, counselors and therapists involves the awakening and refining of the genius of each person.
