In creation stories, humans are often last to come upon the scene. After all the wonders of nature appear, something is missing. So humans are created to fill a primordial gap in creation. In the Mayan origin myth humans are needed to bring both conscious awareness of the wonder of creation and a sense of gratitude for the gift of life.
Gratitude and grace cannot really be measured; nor can they be willed. Each requires that we be open and vulnerable. Grace is a kind of wonder that can fall upon us unexpectedly. Gratitude is like a desert flower that spontaneously blossoms from within us. The presence of either one can break the limits of time and open a moment or a life to wonder and wholeness.
We are most human and most alive when we allow ourselves to be touched by the wonder of the world and when we feel genuine gratitude for the life we have been given.
