The Lizard in the Fire

In this newly re-released audio recording mythologist Michael Meade tells two African stories that deal with the experiences of young males encountering the Great Feminine energies in the world. The ancient tales focus upon the “mother complex” in a boy that becomes activated when the time comes to leave home and when the opportunity arises to have an independent relationship with a woman.

In the wild story of “The Half Giantess” a boy must deal with claiming his own emotions in a realm that seems dominated by the feelings of the personal mother and the power of the Great Feminine. In “The Lizard in the Fire” something must die in order for a youth to be transformed into a man. Once he looks deeply into the eyes of a woman and desires to know her all relationships in the youth’s family must change. In order for the young man and the young woman to be together everyone must experience some level of sacrifice. Mythologist Meade says that growing up means entering a fire and being cooked and transformed by life.
