As the world churns all around us and the troubles of both nature and culture intensify, there can be no single idea, specific movement, or patented belief system that can save us. Rather, a myriad of ingenious solutions and genuine inspirations are now required.
In times of great trouble, the spirit of life calls forth our deepest resources. The old idea of a genius self already present in each person and trying to awaken may serve us better than heroic notions or simply political solutions.
The original idea of genius refers to the inborn spirit and natural gifts of each person. In that sense, everyone has a genius nature and something essential to give to the world. There may be no greater time for people to awaken to the inner spark of genius than this period of worldwide crisis at so many levels of life.
If we are to find creative ways of living together and healing both culture and nature, the awakening of individual genius may be the deepest, most imaginative way to approach the seemingly impossible tasks that face us all. As the old saying advises, adversity reveals genius, prosperity conceals it. In allowing the inner spark of genius to transform us, some transformation of the world also occurs.

Whether it is called an inner muse, guardian angel or the daimon within, this resident spirit can protect, inspire and motivate us. The genius holds the blueprint of our lives and the key to our true purpose. With the future of the earth so much in question, the sense that each person has a genius nature and is subject to a meaningful calling is needed at this time.

Basic education can give a person some knowledge and grounding; but the deeper aim of learning involves awakening to the dream and vision of our lives. In that sense, genius is the spirit behind education and the reason why learning has always been a sacred task. At this time of worldwide transformation, when learning must be redesigned, old ideas of genius can help return education to its original role of inspiring the spirit of life-long learning in people of all ages.

Nature only makes originals and genius marks each of us—regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or social status—as essentially unique and inherently valuable. Resiliency amidst adversity is a hallmark of genius and a crucial capacity for navigating a rapidly changing world. What we need now is the courage to follow our genius all the way to where it would lead us. When enough people awaken to the inner meaning and purpose in their lives, a collective shift of understanding can alter the course of history.
